Developer Workshop on the ASPECT approach to Federated Search and Harvesting
March 10-11, 2009 Leuven, Belgium
The workshop is primarily intended for technical staff of ASPECT content providers and organizations that are interested in becoming Learning Resource Exchange (LRE) associated partners who are not yet connected to the LRE.
During this 2-day workshop, java developers will learn how to optimally use standards such as the Simple Query Interface (SQI) and the Open Archive Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) to connect a learning object repository to the Learning Resource Exchange infrastructure.
The Simple Query Interface (SQI) is an API for querying. Repositories that implement an SQI interface enable federated search engines to dynamically query their content.
The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides a framework for harvesting metadata. Using this framework, metadata collections can easily be mirrored.
As the scope up of this workshop is primarily technical, we strongly recommend that participants bring their development environment with them together with the sources of the application or repository they wish to provide access to in ASPECT. Participants in this workshop should have basic programming skills. We recommend reading the following materials prior to the workshop:
Attendance at the workshop is free of charge but delegates must pay their own travel and subsistence. A nominal fee of 40 Euros (20 Euros per day) also needs to be paid (cash) on site to cover coffee, water, orange juice and lunch.
